The Exiles reveals untold stories of love and loss during an era of racially motivated deportations from post-war UK and Australia. At the end of the Second World War, on opposite sides of the world, Asian men were forcibly deported from their adopted homes, tearing them away from wives and children and thrusting them into an uncertain future. This series tells poignant and little-known stories of men who served valiantly for the Allies during wartime; but in a new era of peace, found themselves unwanted and discarded. Faced with a hostile immigration system, these men were forced onto ships and deported, in some cases in secret and unknown to their own families. The Exiles follows the descendants of these men as they reflect on seismic events from the past which still resonate today. These are poignant and agonising stories of deception and betrayal, and of love and resilience.
At the end of the Second World War, hundreds of Chinese seamen who served with the Allies during the conflict vanished from their homes in Liverpool, England. They left behind heartbroken wives and children, and many went to their graves believing they had been deserted. Decades later, the astonishing truth is finally revealed. Declassified documents prove these heroic men and their families were betrayed by the British government in an astonishing act of deception. As their descendants search for clues, could a potential relative in Singapore be the missing puzzle piece for one Liverpool family?
In 1901, Australia passed a set of racialised laws around immigration commonly known as the White Australia Policy. It sought to severely limit the number of non-British immigrants to Australia. In the wake of the Second World War, Chinese and Malay men who had courageously defended Australia during wartime found themselves forcibly deported to Hong Kong and Singapore. Families were ripped apart, causing trauma that lasted generations. The Exiles follows the descendants who battled this discriminatory policy, and reunites one Singapore family after seventy-five years apart from their Australian relatives.

Singapore in the late 1950s is plagued by the menace of secret society gangs, where criminality rules the streets. To combat this rising threat, a new initiative is born – sending gangsters to a new open-air prison on Pulau Senang, where hard labour becomes a form of rehabilitation.
After landing on a near-deserted island in 1960, the detainees are put to work, constructing a remarkable prison complex that soon becomes the envy of the world. Superintendent Daniel Dutton oversees this prison and devoutly believes that redemption for these gangsters is possible. Just three years later, this island turns into a fiery hell – as the detainees burn the settlement to the ground and brutally murder prison servicemen. The riot appears to be a shocking act of mindless violence but is all as it seems?

Singapore’s contact tracers give us unprecedented access to their modus operandi as they recount some of their biggest cases in the race to contain the spread of COVID-19. Contact tracers leap into action when the first COVID-19 case arrives from China. They have just 24 hours to track down everyone he has come in contact with on one of the most densely populated islands in the world to prevent the disease from spreading out of control.
As a novel coronavirus starts circulating the globe, Singapore’s contact tracers hunker down for the inevitable. This is not the first time they have dealt with an outbreak, but tracking down this unknown, highly contagious and invisible killer will push their skills and experience to the limit.
And it all begins when the first COVID-19 case is confirmed in Singapore. Their mission? To track down everyone this patient from Wuhan, China may have come in contact with on a small island that has one of the highest population densities in the world.
Chaos reigns when the contact tracers realize that Patient 1 traveled in a group, and that he might have spread the virus to his son. A few members of this group also cross the border into Malaysia before Patient 1 was officially diagnosed. Will the contact tracers be able to hunt down and isolate the entire group before the virus spreads further?
Just when Singapore’s contact tracers have tracked down and isolated all visitors from Wuhan, China, they are confounded by a growing cluster of infections at a local church, none of which have known links to China, the epicenter of the COVID-19 outbreak. Within days, an outbreak at another church emerges and the number of infections skyrocket. Could the virus already be spreading within the community?
As fears of a super spreader circulate through Singapore and public pressure mounts, a team of epidemiologists, infectious disease specialists and investigators, both from the Ministry of Health and the police come together to uncover the source of the infections.
Contact tracers are confronted by a sudden surge of infections in Singapore. Alongside worrying reports of mutated strains and even more alarming studies that some people are spreading the disease without ever showing symptoms, daily new cases in the country seem to be appearing out of thin air. With a circuit breaker looming and a vaccine nowhere in sight, the only solution to curbing the pandemic may lie in tracing the virus back to its source – in the animal kingdom.
